Who We are
The Hokianga Community Educational Trust (HCET) is an organisation founded in 2003 for the purpose of supporting and enhancing educational opportunities for the people of Hokianga.
Over the years this has taken many forms, from supporting individuals and groups with advocacy and occasionally funds to running film and book festivals. From the latter has arisen Hokianga Publishers, which now has 10 books in its catalogue.
A fundamental interest is helping activate the local former polytechnic Campus at Rawene, now leased and managed by Te Puna o Kupenuku, a community group set up specifically to enhance community outcomes.
HCET actively supports the new development by employing two people (Akō) to promote Arts and IT on the campus. HCET also provides an umbrella for funds for new and unincorporated groups.
What we do
Hokianga Publishers
Hokianga Publishers shares stories that matter — from local history and heritage to biographies and creative works. Guided by local voices and research, our books reflect the richness and diversity of the Hokianga community.
Ako hokianga
Ako Hokianga is the Arts and IT arm of HCET. We work with funders and the community to create dynamic and relevant courses that enhance creative capacity building to all parts of our community
hokianga science festival
Science should be fun — and we make sure it is! Each year, with support from the House of Science, we bring together schools from North and South Hokianga for a celebration of curiosity and creativity, where students present their inventive, surprising, and often wonderfully quirky projects.
Upcoming Workshops
We are in the process of planning our 2026 workshops and short courses.
