Ko Eva Walker tōku ingoa.
Around 2011, I enrolled in the Applied Arts programme in Rāwene, being introduced to stone carving in my first year.
I did four years of formal art study, completing a Bachelor’s Degree in Visual Arts. With that under my belt, I completed a postgraduate diploma in teaching to formalise my many years of education work.
Through my work as an educator, I can understand that early childhood experiences have an impact on our creative urges through life. My many physical, tactile experiences with stone were usually accompanied by positive emotional moments. So, crafting with stone today for me is not only enjoyable but essential to my well being.
After 12 + years of making, in 2024 I began to teach my craft through the Ako Hokianga arts group. I designed a course outline and dozens of people have now been through the 3-day tuition with me. I hold repair and binding workshops as well, because I believe in empowering people to look after their own whanau taonga and for artists to finish their carvings to a high standard; I recognise a need for this kind of knowledge. (A large proportion of my practice is in repairs and binding).
I currently work in art full time whether it is in my home studio, teaching in school services, or tutoring adults in the community.
